We have entered the final year of construction, so excited to be on track to return to our renewed school at 371 Bloor Street West in November 2021! With the frame and the structure in place, we are now looking inwards to all the wonderful moments that will come in our new school, thanks to your support.
Progress on our building continues unabated, not affected by the current emergency lockdown in Ontario. The new auditorium at UTS has taken shape, with the concrete roof now in place, and an enclosure installed so work on the interior will go on throughout the winter.
Everywhere, rough edges are being smoothed out. Drywall is ongoing around the heritage windows. In the atrium, repair and cleaning of the historic brickwork is underway. The black box theatre’s heritage windows are installed and an immense scaffolding structure erected for work on the ceiling. Vibration isolators that ensure a soundproof ceiling are in place in the music practice rooms.
Now we are planning to complete the picture with all the modern fixtures and furniture, technology and accoutrements, that will make this truly a world-class facility that empowers all the infinite possibilities for UTS students, for decades to come.
The auditorium is the
living room of our school
The new UTS auditorium will a be a place where great memories are made, legends are born and most of all where our community comes together to share milestone moments, such as awards ceremonies and graduation day. With 700 seats and built-in accessibility, it will truly be a space that belongs to everyone. Even though the space is large, the design by Donald Schmitt C.M. ’70 and his team at Diamond Schmitt Architects creates an intimate feel so the audience is hugging the stage and everyone feels on eye level with the performers. The colouring of the seats in three different shades of blue will create the illusion of an audience, making it real for performers when they are practicing.
