Soon the sound of the buzzer will echo in our new McIntyre Gymnasium, with more space to learn and play at our school than ever before.
The Blues will score and the fans will roar, and UTS students will experience the fitness opportunities provided by the state-of-the-art UTS Athletics Centre in our renewed building, core to the transformative education at our school.
Work on our new building is getting down to the details now – those smaller but vital interior finishing touches that make a big difference for the life of our school. The window framing and glazing for the Fleck Atrium has been completed, including the skylight. Beside the McIntyre Gym, changerooms and shower facilities are taking shape with tile installation about to begin.
The Ridley Fitness Centre is also coming together. Inside, there will be a staff office that will have recognition for alumnus, teacher and coach Don Fawcett ’50, and a large open space where students will push the limits of their possibilities using everything from free weights to resistance bands, stationary bikes to training benches.
In the Library, wall partitions for study rooms and storage rooms have been erected and there are grooves in the concrete floor ready for the tracks that will soon support the moveable library stacks. It won’t be long now before students will be studying here.
In the heritage building, flooring is nearly complete on the third floor and now underway on the second level. The elevators are nearly done, ensuring the accessibility of our school for everyone.
Outside the Withrow Auditorium, on the Huron Street side of the building, workers are laying new bricks on the exterior wall adjacent to the space that will become the park.
Congratulations to Eastern Construction for celebrating the 70th anniversary of their company, a track record that speaks for itself! They are doing a wonderful job on our new building, and it won’t be long now before a student sinks a slam dunk in the McIntyre Gym, or makes that unstoppable volleyball serve. It’s going to be epic!
You can make sure that UTS students have all the athletic and fitness training equipment they need in time for their return to 371 Bloor this November.
