A Family Gift
For many families, the UTS experience has been shared across generations, from siblings and cousins sharing the halls of the school to sons and daughters following in their parents’ footsteps.
There are UTS families, and then there are the Catto and Bate clans, who collectively claim 18 alumni across four generations. Their stories merged when Derek Bate ’44, who was a teacher, coach, assistant headmaster, parent, grandparent and executive director of the Alumni Association (earning the nickname “Mister UTS”), married Catherine Catto, whose father John Catto graduated in 1917. The most recent branch of this century-old UTS family tree is Ashley Bate ’16 (pictured inset).
When it came time to consider a gift to the Building the Future campaign, their shared experiences led members of the Catto and Bate families to join together in making a family gift. In the words of Derek Bate ’71, John Bate ’73, Graeme Bate ’75 and John Catto ’51: “We have all benefited enormously from our time at the school; our shared experience and memories of our formative years at UTS are a bond that will always tie the extended family together.
“We thought this was worth recognizing.”
In particular, the family was eager to honour Derek Bate Sr. for his unique legacy at UTS. “Our inspiration was to find an appropriate way, as part of the building of the new UTS physical facility, to recognize the contribution of Derek Sr. to the building of the school’s long-term community.
“As escorts for Derek Sr. to recent Alumni Dinners, we can attest to the numbers of grads and former teachers who seek him out to greet and recognize his impact on their lives and careers.”
Inspired by a connection that bridges generations, the Cattos and Bates have put a family spin on group giving, with contributions from graduates from 1951 to 2016. In doing so, they’ve helped ensure that the UTS tradition of educational excellence continues for future generations of students.
